Saltersgate Primary School in Scawsby, Doncaster, recently welcomed representatives of Animalcare, the UK veterinary pharmaceutical company, to help plant 100 trees in the school grounds.

As part of the Forest School experience, pupils, staff and the Animalcare team planted new saplings, grown in the UK including Crab Apple, Hazel, Oak and Silver Birch, to create wildlife habitats and encourage biodiversity.

The children gained hands on experience of how trees are planted and learned about how trees impact the world we live in.

To facilitate the tree planting, Animalcare joined forces with Carbon Footprint, a company committed to helping environmentally responsible businesses reduce the impact their business activities have on the environment, and Tree Appeal, which works with environmentally responsible companies to help them reduce their carbon footprint to facilitate the tree planting.

Rachel Smithson, General Manager at Animalcare said:

‘We had a great day with the children from Saltersgate Infant School. We’d like to thank everyone who took part for helping us reach our aim of planting 100 trees. This is part of our commitment to environmental education and to reducing the impact we have on the natural world.’

Jenny Coy, Saltersgate Infant School’s Forest Schools Practitioner added:

‘The ethos of Forest School is one of child centred learning. Children can explore the natural environment and plant trees and seeds. We’d like to thank Animalcare for sponsoring these trees and for coming along to help plant them.’

VOACON: 24th and 25th May 2023 – Grand Hotel Leicester

Animalcare UK Ltd is really pleased to be supporting the first VOACON as a Platinum sponsor. This event is important, bringing together those interested in improving the treatment and management of osteoarthritis (OA) from across the veterinary sector.

This inaugural two-day Veterinary Osteoarthritis Congress brings together the foremost minds at the cutting-edge of osteoarthritis treatment and management and the companies pushing the developments in technology and treatment.

View the programme here: VOACON Programme

Osteoarthritis is a complex condition which may remain with affected animals for many years. There is no single strategy that can effectively deal with the full range of issues that arise for the animal and owner from the point of diagnosis and which may vary over time. It is only by using a range of approaches that we can fully safeguard the welfare of the animals we seek to treat. Many of these strategies are brought together for the first time in the UK and highlighted in the exciting programme at VOACON. We hope to see this event well supported and look forward to talking to delegates.

Daxocox®, the first and only weekly oral NSAID for the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis in dogs, seeks to help owners with convenient and effective long-term pain control for their dog; and Danilon® Equidos Gold for horses with osteoarthritis and other painful musculo-skeletal conditions. Both these products provide the veterinary professional with tools in the armoury to assist with the long-term management of OA.

Animalcare is a sustainable and passionate organisation committed to leading in animal health through innovative and trusted products and services to support the veterinary profession. Please visit us on our stand and also join us in our presentations at VOACON where we will be highlighting the role that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can play in long term condition management for OA.

To mark National Dental Pet Health Month in February, Animalcare are on the look-out for a Dental Month Superstar Practice.

We’re launching a contest to see how creatively practices can use dental pack resources we have created to highlight National Dental Care Month and engage with their clients about the importance of oral health.  The pack contains a range of posters and point-of-sale items which can be used to brighten up a waiting room, while offering clients useful information about the oral health of their pets.

The winning practice will receive a Swan Retro Pump Espresso Coffee Machine for its team to enjoy.

Commenting, Animalcare Brand Manager Kai Crawshaw said: “Despite research showing that at least 80% of dogs and 70% of cats are likely to develop periodontal disease by the age of three¹, dental care is still too often neglected. National Dental Pet Health Month is a perfect opportunity to remind clients of the simple steps they can take to protect their pets’ oral health.

Animalcare recently launched its Plaqtiv+® home dental care range. Featuring patented Xpersiv™ technology, the Plaqtiv+® range captures minerals and inhibits biofilm maturation to reduce the formation of calculus – a key contributor to periodontal disease.

Practices can order their Dental Waiting Room Pack at www.animalcare.co.uk/dentalmonth. Those wishing to enter the contest are asked to email a photo of their waiting room during February to info@animalcare.co.uk.

Animalcare has moved to a new Head Office in a newly refurbished office space next to Monk Cross Retail Park, to the north of York.

The new offices have been specifically designed to maximise the hybrid working pattern that the company has adopted in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. They provide hot-desking for the company’s employees, together with one-to-one meeting pods for fast and efficient meetings. The move also further reduces Animalcare’s environmental footprint and supports its commitment to a carbon net zero status.

Commenting, Rachel Smithson, Animalcare General Manager, said, “We are very excited to move into our new offices and start another chapter in the rich history of Animalcare.

“The new offices will provide us with the tools to be successful in a modern and ever-changing work environment. Their location, close to the shops and amenities of Monks Cross, will be hugely beneficial to our current and future employees, while keeping us close to the beautiful city of York.”

OraStripdx™, a periodontal diagnostic strip that estimates the levels of thiols dissolved in oral fluid, thereby indicating the level of periodontal disease in an awake patient, has been launched by Animalcare. The visual result shown on the strip can support vets and veterinary nurses in explaining to owners the often-invisible early signs of periodontal disease, without the need to examine the animal under anaesthetic. It also gives them a platform from which to start a conversation about dental health and care.

Each OraStripdx™ comprises a dry porous pad, pre-treated with a mixture containing a thiol detection reagent, attached to a plastic backing. The easy-to-use strip is gently swiped along the maxillary gingival margins. The pad changes colour from off-white to various intensities of yellow, representing the concentration of thiols present. The result gives the veterinary team a snapshot of the pet’s dental health, indicating the probability of significant periodontal disease and alveolar bone loss.

The WSAVA Global Dental Guidelines note that the use of a test strip for measuring levels of dissolved thiols can be very useful during an oral examination and that the test strips have been shown to improve client compliance with dental recommendations.

OraStripdx™ is the latest addition to Animalcare’s growing dental range, which includes the Plaqtiv+® oral homecare range.

Dr Colin Capner, Senior Technical Vet at Animalcare, explained: “OraStripdx™ helps to prompt, and raise the profile of veterinary oral health conversations in practice, employing an easy to use, evidence based diagnostic test for periodontal disease that does not require a general anaesthetic. In demonstrating the presence of periodontal disease in dogs and cats to clients through a test strip colourimetric change, it bridges the gap between oral examination and the requirement for clinical veterinary intervention. Early detection of otherwise invisible periodontal disease will help to maintain good pet oral health and welfare, and facilitate awareness of the potential need for planned clinical treatments.”

Animalcare has taken over as the UK distributor of Danilon® Equidos Gold, the leading equine pain management NSAID.

With low ulcerogenic potential and excellent compliance Danilon® Gold is trusted by many owners. It is used to relieve the pain caused by musculoskeletal conditions, such as osteoarthritis (OA), bursitis, laminitis, and soft tissue inflammation in their horses.

Some oral NSAIDs have been shown in increase the risk of gastric irritation¹ – a potential cause for concern for both veterinary surgeons and owners, particularly for the treatment of chronic conditions. However, in gastric studies², horses given Danilon® Gold showed a reduced number of ulcers and those that did appear were less severe. The area of gastric mucosa affected was also five times less.

Accurate administration is critical for clinical success. To support this, Danilon® Gold is presented in a coloured granule formulation and is now available in 3g sachets. Acceptance by the horse is also key and Danilon® Gold’s palatability offers excellent proven voluntary intake.

Commenting, Animalcare Brand Manager Kai Crawshaw said:

“As the original marketing authorisation holder of Danilon® Gold, we are delighted that we are now distributing this incredible product in the UK.

“Danilon® joins our focused suite of products for veterinarians to help them ensure the optimum health and welfare of their equine patients.”
